Sun, April 23, 9:45am – 12:15pm
Restoration is the work of returning something to its former state and relaxation is the state of freedom from tension or anxiety. Our goal is reformation: the act of improving or making changes for the better.
The technique of restorative yoga is to embody formal forms (asanas) whose geometry over time allows for a therapeutic experience. The Katonah® approach to restorative yoga is meant to reshape a stressed out, uninformed or broken body, which helps to set up the conditions to redirect a life.
This masterclass is for both teachers looking to assimilate restorative theory into their teaching, as well as students interested in immersing themselves in a restorative experience to more deeply profit from it.

About Stephanie Hicks
Stephanie Hicks (PhD, RYT-200) came to the practice of yoga in 2011, after many starts and stops on the yoga mat. She hoped the practice would help her create some stability in a time of great precarity in her life. What she found was even greater: a community, a renewed sense of purpose, and the ability to look at herself and others with more grace and compassion, and less judgment and fear.
From 2011-2016, she practiced and worked at Moksha Yoga Center in Chicago. Under the guidance of strong, loving and knowledgeable teachers, she has practiced Restorative, Vinyasa Flow and Ashtanga yoga, among other styles. In 2016, she founded Yoga for Black Lives to support resistance to state-sanctioned violence against Black life by giving people the opportunity to take part in a life-affirming and life-sustaining practice. Her writing and thoughts
about yoga, social identities and systems of oppression has appeared in Practicing Yoga as Resistance: Voices of Color in Search of Freedom and Yoga Journal.
Stephanie has practiced and taught in various studios around the US, as well as Central America. When she’s not on the mat, Stephanie can be found teaching in the University of Michigan’s Program on Intergroup Relations, where she’s a faculty member.

BLOOMFIELD WORKSHOP
Hatha Yoga + Shamanic Journey
Sat, Feb 18, 2-4pm
The postures of Hatha Yoga have the potential to alter consciousness. When optimally aligned in asana, the body’s energy channels are opened and the mind, perceiving the resultant flow, is affected such that we experience various distinct states of being. Tree helps us feel rooted, and child’s pose asks us to turn inward. The practice of Hatha Yoga calls into existence an aware embodiment of specific qualities or states of being.
Shamanism is a practice of altering consciousness and connecting to spirit. It derives from nomadic cultures throughout history and around the world. Although there are many ways shamans create an altered awareness, one of the most common uses the staccato beat of a ceremonial drum to open a portal through which to journey.
This 2-hour workshop begins with “calling in the directions” to open ourselves to the spirit realm. It proceeds through a 45-minute asana practice, moves into a shamanic journey, and ends with a sharing circle.
Bring a yoga mat, an inquisitive heart, and a friend if you’d like. Prepare to connect to Spirit in new ways and to have fun.

Self-Study + Restorative Practice for Ethnic and Race-Based Stress and Trauma with Dr. Gail Parker
Tue, May 9, 5:30-8:30pm
In a racialized world we are all, regardless of race or ethnicity, whether directly or indirectly, affected by race and racism. Because the cultural norm in the United States has been to remain silent regarding its impact, we are embedded in a culture of unexamined untreated, unhealed ethnic and racial stress and trauma. Addressing these emotional wounds requires that each one of us take an honest look at the wounding we have endured and the wounding we have inflicted on others. In order for lasting change to occur, self-reflection and self-study, svadhyaya are required.
In this webinar tools will be offered, through a yogic lens, that can help you compassionately explore, address and transcend your own stress and trauma regarding race and ethnicity, allowing you to engage in emotionally restorative relationships with others.
5:30p-8:00p Lecture & 8:00p-8:30p Q&A
Teacher: Dr. Gail Parker, Ph.D., C-IAYT, E-RYT 500, YACEP
