Name: Kristen DuBois

What is your idea of perfect happiness?
I think that pure happiness exists when we are completely immersed and wrapped in the present moment.  There is a lack of want and no distracting thoughts.  There is only joy and the appreciation for everything happening in that instant — babies and animals are really great at it.

What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?
When I allow myself to worry.

What is the trait you most deplore in others?
Negativity.

When and where were you happiest?
As a kid, in dance class.  Nowadays, when I’m dancing, rehearsing, or performing; also, definitely when I’m on my mat or out on a trail.

When did you start practicing yoga?
I started practicing regularly in 2013, and took my first class at Citizen with Miss Lauren on November 2, 2014.  (I looked it up.  What a weirdo.)

What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Growing to have a better understanding of who I am and who I am not and being okay with all of it.

What is your most treasured possession?
My Vitamix. Game changer.

Who are your heroes in real life?
All of these incredible Detroit Metro entrepreneurs!  I love the energy of the city and the resilience of the people who live and work here, especially the ones who stayed when everything seemed uncertain.  There is so much happening right now.  People are collaborating, innovating, and working together to lift each other up and create a community for growth.  It sends a very positive message.

What is it that you most dislike?
Cruelty and Violence.  And Littering.

What or who is the greatest love of your life?
My main squeeze, Brian, who is so incredibly supportive and encouraging.  And my Lucy girl, my puppy life partner who I said goodbye to this winter.

Which talent would you most like to have?
The first thing that comes to mind is being one of those musical prodigies who can play a gazillion instruments.  Oh, yeah.  And they can sing.  I don’t understand that kind of talent belonging to just one human.

What is your current state of mind?
Mostly clear-headed and excited for a new season!

What is the quality you like most in a person?
I love it when people are unapologetically true to themselves.

What do you most value in your friends?
Feeling connected and known.

Which words or phrases do you most overuse?
I would love to rid myself of the use of the word “like” in any grammatically incorrect context.

What is your favorite yoga position?
Can I pick forward fold?

What is your favorite song?
That is a loaded question.  “The Gambler” by fun.

What is your favorite part about Royal Oak/Detroit?
The craft cocktails and delicious, diverse food.

What is the first thing you do when you wake up?
I think about what I’m going to eat for breakfast.

What helps you fall asleep?
Journaling or reading.
